Familia, I’m not trying to brag, but the excitement is too much💫. I’m going to the Bad Bunny concert this week, and I can’t stop thinking about how this album has everyone reflecting on Spanish language, Puerto Rican culture, and personal identity.
When the album dropped, even non-Spanish speakers were vibing. Spanish understanders felt motivated to learn. And fluent speakers? Proudly flexing their bilingual skills.
But here’s the thing: Benito has been playing with language long before this album.
So in celebration, here are 3 language lessons from Bad Bunny that remind us why speaking your truth—in any language—is powerful:
1. YHLQMDLG✨ Use the language you feel most confident in to pursue passion and connection.
Bad Bunny has been clear from the beginning, he uses the language he feels most confident in to pursue his passion.
If you’re confident in your language, you can focus on the pursuit of excellence. Whether you’re acting, performing, or presenting, using the language that feels natural lets you show up with joy and focus on mastering your skill to stand out above the crowd. Confidence leads to consistency. Consistency leads to mastery. (Bad Bunny on the Daily Show with Trevor Noah)
2. I DON’T CAAARE🗣️ Don’t shrink your expression just so others can understand.
In an interview with Popcast, when asked about his thoughts on people who don’t understand his music he responded with: “I DON’T CAAARE” which is perfect.
The myth is that you need to make yourself understood in a certain language or a certain way of speaking to get into powerful rooms. But when something is innately good, people will figure out how to understand it. You don’t need to translate yourself to be valid. Powerful ideas transcend language. When you lead with confidence, people will lean in and listen, regardless of the language. (Bad Bunny Doesn’t Care About the Language Barrier)
3. From SPEAKING NON-ENGLISH to SPEAKING A SEXIER LANGUAGE 🎭 Play with language.
When Bad Bunny hosted SNL in 2024, he brought his English, Spanish, Spanglish and humor to remind people that his language choices do not come from an inability to speak English but rather a preference to speak Spanish (or in this case Spanglish). Period.
Language is evolving, and so are you, so have fun, find humor, make mistakes, and celebrate what you do know. Connection matters more than perfection. (Bad Bunny SNL Monologue)
Take a note from el conejo malo: Speak in a way that feels honest, joyful, and fully you.
